Although Google dominates the world of search engines Bing still has about 9% share in the global search engine market. As per the company data Bing has about 33% share in US markets with about 5 billion monthly searches. This data obviously gives us the hint that we should not ignore Bing while working on our sitemaps. Just like Google Console, Bing also has a portal for site owners known as Bing Webmaster Tools. We have already discussed the importance of XML sitemaps and how to create a site map for our WordPress blog. In this tutorial, we will learn how to add our XML sitemap to Bing Webmasters Tool.
Step1: Go to Bing Webmasters portal.
Step2: We can sign up using a Microsoft, Google or Facebook account. Select our preferred option and proceed with the sign-up process.
Step3: Once the sign-up process is complete we can go to the dashboard and enter our site URL in the ‘Add a Site‘ field.
Also, we have to enter our site map URL. Select the “All Day(Default)” option for the drop-down regarding our site’s traffic.
Step4: Now click Add button to add our website as well as our XML sitemap to Bing Webmasters.
Step5: Before Bing starts crawling our content we need to verify our site ownership. There are 3 available options for doing this. The easiest way is by copying the authentication code from the option 2 section as highlighted below.
Step6: Now login to our WordPress dashboard and click on the Yoast SEO General settings. This option will be available only if we have installed the famous Yoast SEO plugin for WordPress.This plugin is a must if we are concerned about our site’s SEO. Step7: Go to Webmaster Tools Tab and add the previously copied code under Bing Verification code. Click the Save Changes button at the bottom.
Step8: Now go to Bing Webmaster portal and click Verify button to verify our site ownership.
Bing may take up to 2 days for crawling our sitemap content for the first time. Until this, the status will be displayed as Pending.
Once the crawl process is complete Bing portal will display the status as Success as shown in the below figure.
If Bing encounters any issue while crawling our content it will be displayed in the “Crawl Information” section available under the “Reports & Data” tab.
Thus in a few simple steps, we have successfully added our sitemap to Bing portal. This will help Bing search engine to crawl our content more effectively.
